Lively neighborhoods usually have a mix of building types. They also have a variety of commercial shops and services. Shoreline has seen a lot of development recently; however, it has primarily been residential apartment buildings. The City Council recently passed interim regulations requiring space for commercial and other nonresidential uses on the ground floors of new residential apartment buildings. During this period with the interim regulation, the Planning Commission will study this issue in more depth. One of the main reasons for requiring commercial space in residential buildings is to support local economic activity and create neighborhood centers and corridors that serve residents. The Planning Commission will make a recommendation to the Council. The Council will make the final decision on whether to adopt permanent regulations.
