UPDATE 8/15/2024:

We have reviewed the 30% Design, comments we received during our open houses, and conversations with property owners on the corridor. We’ve also received the arborist survey of trees in the project area.

Based on the arborist survey and the feedback we have received, we are considering adding sections of planting strip to the design. One planting strip would be located on the sidewalk segment from N 185th Street to Richmond Beach Road between the sidewalk and the street. To incorporate this change, we would need to remove and replant trees. The impacted trees are tag numbers 1-16 in the arborist survey. They include 15 Japanese flowering cherries in very poor to fair condition and one Mugo pine in good condition. At this point in the design process we do not have the number of trees that will be replanted, however, the quantity of replanted trees will be determined as we continue progressing through the design phases. Replanted trees will be selected from the City of Shoreline’s approved street tree list.

Another possible planting strip would be between NW 185th St and NW 180th St, however the exact location is being determined and will be better defined at 60% design. Tree impacts could also be possible with this addition, but we are actively working to avoid impacts to the large trees in this section. We do not have detailed tree tag numbers at this stage.

8th Avenue NW from NW 180th Street to Richmond Beach Road NW

Project Overview

This project will construct a new sidewalk on 8th Avenue NW between NW Richmond Beach Road and NW 180th Street near the north side of Sunset Park. The sidewalk will be built on the east side of the street. A bike lane will be added to the west side of the street.

This project is part of the 2018 voter-approved effort to build and repair sidewalks throughout Shoreline.

Project improvements include:

  • Pedestrian facilities with curbs and gutters
  • Bicycle facilities
  • Curb ramps
  • Drainage improvements

Design

The 30% Design [pdf] is now available to review. 30% Design is an early draft in the design process and elements included could change as we review the plan and consider community input

Preliminary design:

A typical cross section of the street after the project is completed will include two 10 foot traffic lanes, a 5 foot bike lane, and a 6 foot sidewalk.

Two segments will also include a planter strip buffer between the sidewalk and the bike lane, with the possible addition of two more segments.

Tree Impacts

A determination of which trees need to be removed and which can be saved will happen through coordination with the arborist between the 30% and 60% design levels. We are considering alterations to the 30% design to include a planting strip on the sidewalk segment from N 185th Street to Richmond Beach Road between the sidewalk and the street. We held an in-person Open House on Tuesday, July 23 at First Lutheran Church of Richmond Beach attended by 25 people. The discussions were engaging and constructive, highlighting a significant interest and numerous requests for further improvements, such as speed bumps, planter strips, and wider sidewalks in areas.
