The closure of N 145th Street between 1st Avenue NE and I-5 has been extended to early 2025. We will provide a specific opening date when it is available.

We are making improvements to NE 145th Street (State Route 523), including the Interstate 5 interchange. Phase 1 of the 145th Street Corridor Project and I-5 interchange Project will replace the signalized intersections on either side of I-5 with roundabouts and update lane configurations on the bridge over I-5. On the west side of the interchange, we will widen the roadway between I-5 and Corliss Avenue to improve traffic operations, mobility, and safety.

Phases 2 and 3 of the 145th Street Corridor Project are expected to begin construction as soon as 2025 and will extend these improvements to Linden Avenue.

Once complete, these projects will improve safety and multimodal access along the 145th Street corridor and help connect to the future Sound Transit Shoreline South/148th Light Rail Station, planned to open in 2024. The interchange improvements will alleviate traffic congestion and enhance transportation mobility, reliability, and safety for all users.

What to expect

Throughout the project, travelers and residents will see shifted lanes, overnight lane and/or ramp closures, reduced speed limit in work zones, and short and long-term closures.

  • Closure of N 145th Street
    • Update on the closure, Sept. 20, 2024: The long-term closure of N 145th Street between 1st Avenue N and I-5 has been extended to early 2025. Underground utility conflicts and unforeseen existing conditions have extended the closure. The I-5 interchange will remain open during construction.
    • The length of the closure extension is not determined. Our construction management team is working with the contractor and other agencies regarding the new road opening date, and we will communicate this once it is determined.
    • If you are a frequent user of the 145th corridor, we advise you to plan for additional travel time and use alternate routes during this period. We anticipate the closure will last until the fall of 2024. Unfortunately, there’s no way around it; construction on a major corridor like 145th is a significant disruption. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to enhance the safety and efficiency of our transportation infrastructure.
    • A 24/7 hotline is available for people to call with questions or concerns: 206-899-5127.
    • You can also email the project team at 145thProject@shorelinewa.gov.

      Detour routes
The primary detour routes when heading east and west are N 155th and N 130th Streets. There are no impacts to traffic travelling north and south on Meridian Avenue N, 1st Avenue, 5th Avenue or 15th Avenue NE. However, northbound travelers on 1st Avenue are restricted from turning left to go west on Northeast 155th Street. See below for a detailed map of the detour routes.

  • Tree impacts
    • Around the same time as the beginning of the closure of 145th, contractors will begin removing trees in the project area. We have designed these projects to affect as few trees as possible. However, the project involves widening the footprint of 145th Street, which will require the removal of a significant number of trees. We will plant new trees once the project is complete.
    • This project will impact trees to accommodate the city’s goals of creating a dense walkable corridor. For more information on the number of trees removed and the strategic replacement, please see the Tree Impacts section of the 145th Project page and the City of Shoreline FAQs about tree impacts.

Note: Northbound travelers on 1st Avenue are unable to turn left to go west on Northeast 155th Street.
